N.O.T. Program Collier High School

Why do young people take up smoking when they know its dangers–over 430,000 Americans die each year from smoking-related causes–and cigarettes are so expensive? Typically young people begin smoking between the ages of 11 and 13. Reasons for this are many and may include peer pressure, rebellion, wanting to create a certain image, and satisfying curiosity. Many teens continue to smoke to manage uncomfortable feelings, reduce stress and/or boredom, and even control weight. Nicotine addiction can develop very quickly. Once addicted, youngsters are subject to the physical and psychological effects of cravings and withdrawal symptoms making quitting extremely difficult.

In response to this nicotine addiction, Collier High School offers N-O-T (Not On Tobacco) which is a well-regarded school-based adolescent smoking cessation program. NOT provides an effective and easy-to-use method for helping adolescents quit smoking. In addition, NOT offers a holistic approach by focusing on overall health and improving daily life management skills.

N-O-T is offered at Collier in both the fall and spring semesters. The group meets once a week for 8 consecutive weeks. Please see or call Student Assistance Coordinator Kelly Brown (X245) to sign up!
