Special Effect Make Up Class
by Mrs. Tegano
For the first time at Collier High School we have a Special-Effects Make-up class. This is a project-based course where students are engaged in all aspects of the make-up industry. For this semester, the students chose to re-create the characters from Tim Burton’s 2010 version of the Disney classic Alice In Wonderland. The girls used airbrush, traditional, and theater make-up techniques to develop the various characters. Once the looks were completed on their models, the students then acted as on-set stylists at the photo shoot. The pictures at the shoot were taken by our very own photography students taught by Mr. Bush.
The characters featured for the project were the Cheshire Cat, an overwhelmed Alice, the Mad Hatter, the bullying Red Queen and the oppositional Caterpillar. These photos will be included in the student’s personal portfolios, a necessity for advertising and showcasing one’s work in the competitive field of make-up.
I’ve been very pleased to see how well the students have taken to this course which was a natural outgrowth of our Cosmetology program. I always knew Collier High School students were talented but I never appreciated how much until I saw their incredible creations. Look out, there’s more to come!
